Unfortunately, finding a starving or malnourished stray kitten is a very common situation. Oftentimes, this is due to abandonment, neglect or absence of mandatory preventive actions, such as neutering/ spaying. Just to give you a glimpse of it, according to PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), there is a likelihood that from 60 to 100 million defenseless kittens may be found in the streets of the United States.

In light of this, knowing what to do when you come across a kitten is of paramount importance. Thus, we have listed on this post a few steps you must follow in order to rescue a stray cat!

What precautions should I take when coming across a stray kitten?

Firstly, you should keep in mind that cats are not tame animals, and they may not take being rescued so well. Therefore, at a first moment, patience and persistence are required so as to make them come to you. After you get to hold the kitten, follow the instructions below:

Isolate them from other pets

If you have any other pets at home, it is very important to isolate them from the rescued kitten. This is a necessary precaution since you don’t know the rescued pet’s origin, their disposition or whether they have any diseases.

Take them to the vet

The next step is taking them to the vet. The veterinary will look at them closely to see whether they have any conditions. Moreover, depending on the stray kitten’s age and state, the vet will also indicate tests and recommend which vaccines should be given. During this time, talking to him about the possibility of getting the cat fixed is a best practice.

Get your home ready

The kitten is vaccinated, safe and sound and ready for a new home. What now? If you intend to keep them, it is important to prepare your home to have them – regardless of whether there are other pets in the house or not.

Among the main items, they will need a bed, food and water bowls, a litter box, toys and a scratching post. Installing netting on your doors and windows will also be required in order to prevent them from escaping or taking any risky outings – which, in case they have not been fixed, might lead to the birth of new kittens.

To those who have other pets at home, it is best to introduce them slow and carefully to make sure the new relation turns out as good as possible!

What should I do if I can’t keep them?

If you can’t adopt the stray kitten, there are a few measures you can take, such as:

– To publish on your social networks that you have rescued a cat and he/she needs a cozy new home;

– To talk to your friends to check if any of them already intend to adopt a pet;

– To contact NGOs and animal shelters to see if they can help you.
